Childhood emotional neglect (CEN) occurs when caregivers fail to notice, respond to, or validate a child's emotional experience. The child learns that feelings are unwelcome, dangerous, or shameful. As an adult, that same person minimizes their own emotions, struggles to identify needs and wants, and draws an almost straight line from childhood emotional neglect to health problems and relationship dysfunction.
