According to trauma recovery coach Kenny Weiss, the five core symptoms of codependency are universal, but the expression depends on the survival persona. The Disempowered Codependent gets self-worth from others' approval, people-pleases into what Pia Mellody calls "sadistic niceness," can't say no, rescues everyone, and stays too needy. The Falsely Empowered Codependent derives self-worth from achievement and power, is walled off and anti-dependent, avoids intimacy through busyness, and is often misdiagnosed as a narcissist when the real diagnosis is unhealed childhood shame hidden behind success.
Kenny Weiss teaches that the Falsely Empowered Codependent is the most misunderstood survival persona on the planet. These are the high-achievers, CEOs, and empire builders — people society calls "strong, sexy, measured, and mature" — who are actually hiding severe low self-esteem and a deep shame core behind competency and control. Kenny points to the Carl Icahn documentary as a public example: a billionaire who admits he was horribly treated in childhood, gets no satisfaction from conquering, and keeps conquering because shame told him he had to earn worth.
For Kenny Weiss, most people diagnosed as narcissists are actually Falsely Empowered Codependents. The narcissist has lost empathy; the Falsely Empowered Codependent has walled off empathy to survive. One cannot heal because the capacity is gone; the other can heal because the capacity is intact but buried.
