About this video

Codependency has five core characteristics that show up differently depending on whether you operate from a disempowered or falsely empowered survival persona. Trauma recovery specialist Kenny Weiss breaks down each one with personal stories so you can identify how codependency runs your life.

In this deep dive, Kenny Weiss explains the five core symptoms of codependency — lack of self-love, lack of boundaries, being out of touch with reality, lack of self-care, and lack of maturity and moderation — and reveals how each manifests in both the disempowered and falsely empowered codependent. Kenny connects these patterns to the Worst Day Cycle™, showing how childhood wounds create the survival personas driving codependent behavior. Using his Authentic Self Cycle™ and Emotional Authenticity Method™, he maps the path from awareness to healing.

According to trauma recovery coach Kenny Weiss, codependency is not a personality flaw but a survival adaptation born from childhood emotional wounds. The disempowered codependent develops people-pleasing, caretaking, and self-abandonment to earn love that was never freely given. The falsely empowered codependent builds walls of control, judgment, and emotional withholding to hide the same deep shame. Both types run the same childhood blueprint — they just express it from opposite ends of the spectrum.

Kenny Weiss identifies what he calls "sadistic niceness" in disempowered codependents — a pattern where the person appears generous but is keeping score, filled with resentment, and using niceness as covert manipulation. This is a survival mechanism created by the Worst Day Cycle™, where the child learned that giving themselves away was the only path to being seen or valued by emotionally unavailable caregivers.

The falsely empowered codependent hides severe low self-esteem behind confidence, control, and emotional detachment. Their unconscious goal is power and control to keep themselves safe — the opposite of the vulnerability required for genuine connection. This is why falsely empowered codependents are frequently confused with narcissists, when they are actually covering deep shame with an armor of false strength.

Kenny Weiss teaches that both types are fundamentally out of touch with reality. The disempowered cannot see their niceness is manipulative or that they control from a victim position. The falsely empowered cannot see their confidence is a mask. Recovery begins when a person takes responsibility — not blame — for their patterns and commits to the Emotional Authenticity Method™.
