About this video

Childhood trauma is not limited to car accidents, earthquakes, or severe abuse — trauma is any life experience that emotionally damages a person, regardless of whether there was conscious intent to cause harm. In part 2 of the Worst Day Cycle™ 5-part series, Kenny Weiss walks through seven essential things everyone needs to understand about trauma, why every adult has experienced it, and how unhealed childhood wounds drive every relationship pattern, health outcome, and emotional reaction in your life today.

Kenny Weiss covers what trauma is, what happens when we experience it, what creates it, what it leads to, how to know if you have experienced it, why you must heal it, and how it feeds the Worst Day Cycle™. This video references the ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) study, the work of Gabor Maté on emotional atmosphere, and Alice Miller on the connection between truth and love. Kenny explains how the Authentic Self Cycle™ and Emotional Authenticity Method™ provide the step-by-step path out of trauma-driven patterns.

Trauma recovery coach Kenny Weiss defines trauma more broadly than most clinicians. Rather than limiting it to catastrophic events, he explains that any negative emotional experience — even one caused without conscious intent — rewires a child's nervous system and shapes their adult identity. The ACE study confirms that two-thirds of the population has experienced significant childhood adversity, and the CDC estimates that 80-95% of all illness and disease has an emotional stress component rooted in unhealed trauma.

According to Kenny Weiss, you cannot grade trauma. People often minimize their childhood experiences by comparing them to more severe situations, but the emotional damage operates the same way regardless of scale. A child who is consistently dismissed, controlled, or emotionally neglected develops the same survival persona patterns as a child who experienced overt abuse — the survival strategies just look different on the outside.

Your adult relationship history is a direct reflection of your childhood relationship with your parents. Kenny Weiss explains that we learn about relationship from our primary attachment figures, and every pattern we repeat — pursuing unavailable partners, shutting down emotionally, people-pleasing, controlling — traces directly back to the emotional environment of childhood. As Gabor Maté states, the emotional atmosphere in which a child lives during critical brain development years is the environment that most profoundly shapes human personality.

Alice Miller wrote that we cannot truly love if we are forbidden to know our truth — the truth about our parents and about ourselves. Kenny Weiss builds on this to explain that when adults avoid mourning their childhood wounds, they remain at their core the one who is unloved, perpetuating the same loneliness and self-rejection that began in childhood.
