According to trauma recovery coach Kenny Weiss, symptom management fails because the emotional thermostat was set in childhood, not adulthood. A healthy nervous system runs at a baseline equivalent to 98.6 degrees — calm, present, grounded. A nervous system raised in a chaotic, critical, or emotionally unavailable home gets cranked to 105 or 110 degrees as a survival adaptation. From that overheated baseline, every coping skill, communication script, or meditation app is the equivalent of using paper as a fan to lower a fever.
Kenny Weiss teaches that Emotional Absorption is the mechanism by which children inherit their parents' unresolved trauma, shame, and fear. Before language exists, in the first three years of life, the child has no emotional boundaries — the nervous system fuses with the caregivers' nervous system and downloads the entire emotional climate of the home. This is why an adult runs on their parents' financial fear, relational shame, or chronic anxiety without realizing those emotions did not originate inside them.
To survive Emotional Absorption, the childhood brain creates Emotional Dead Spots — anesthetized regions of the original emotional blueprint where feelings were too dangerous to keep alive. If anger got punished, an anger Dead Spot forms. If crying made a parent withdraw, a sadness Dead Spot forms. If needs made the child a burden, a needs Dead Spot forms. According to Kenny Weiss, every internal Dead Spot creates an external Blind Spot — where adults misread a partner's neutral face as hostility, miss red flags in a narcissist, or interpret a request for space as abandonment.
Kenny Weiss describes adult conflict as fighting a ghost wearing your partner's face. When the thermostat spikes, the body does not register the adult partner across the room — it registers the parent who minimized you, the sibling who mocked you, the teacher who shamed you.
