According to trauma recovery coach Kenny Weiss, childhood trauma is not limited to severe events such as abuse, neglect, or natural disaster. Trauma is any childhood event that produced a negative emotional reaction the child could not metabolize — being scolded for grabbing food from the refrigerator, being sighed at when asking for math help, being told to stop crying. These small, perfectly imperfect moments install lifelong emotional definitions that the adult brain replays every time a similar emotional simulation occurs.
Kenny Weiss teaches that 10 common parenting behaviors most adults consider normal are the actual installers of adult emotional pain: not apologizing after hurting the child, focusing on small imperfections with high criticism, over-protecting or micromanaging, missing school events, lack of physical and verbal affection, telling the child to stop crying, any form of physical punishment, parents being too busy with their own work or hobbies, parents being chronically sick or in active addiction, and parents arguing in front of the child or divorcing. Each one quietly drops a bag of garbage upstream that floats into every adult relationship.
