Codependence Recovery | Understanding Morals and Values
About this video
Codependence recovery requires understanding where your morals and values actually come from — and whether they are yours or your parents'. In this video, trauma recovery specialist Kenny Weiss explains the difference between a moral and a value, gives you seven self-assessment questions, and connects it all to Lawrence Kohlberg's three levels of moral development to show why most adults are still operating from a child's moral framework.
Kenny Weiss teaches that codependency is rooted in childhood emotional wounds that keep adults stuck in prepubescent moral development — operating from fear of punishment, need for approval, and duty to conform. The Worst Day Cycle™ explains how these inherited morals and values become the invisible operating system running your life. The Authentic Self Cycle™ provides the corrective path: moving from inherited beliefs to self-determined values through truth, responsibility, healing, and forgiveness. The Emotional Authenticity Method™ gives you the step-by-step process to identify which feelings are driving your moral choices and whether those feelings belong to your survival persona or your authentic self.
According to trauma recovery coach Kenny Weiss, most people have never examined whether their morals and values are actually their own or were inherited from their parents. He teaches that your life story is the evidence: if your relationships are chaotic, your finances are struggling, and your health is suffering, it is proof that you are living against your true morals and values and operating without a North Star.
Kenny Weiss connects codependency to psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg's three-level theory of moral development. Level one (preconventional, ages 3-7) is based on power and avoiding punishment. Level two (conventional, ages 8-13) is based on duty, conformity, and seeking admiration. Level three (postconventional) involves thinking for yourself and pursuing the greater good — but research shows only 10-15% of adults ever reach this level. Kenny Weiss argues this is direct evidence of how prevalent codependency is in society.
The seven questions Kenny Weiss poses for codependence recovery are: Are my morals and values working for me or against me? Are they based on power? Are they based on seeking reward or avoiding punishment from my parents? Are they based on duty and conforming to my parents' beliefs? Are they based on conforming to society's approval? Am I willing to face punishment or rejection to claim my own beliefs? And what would my morals and values be if I thought for myself and pursued the greater good?
