How Narcissists Are Made
About this video
How narcissists are made — and it is not genetics. Narcissistic personality disorder originates in adverse childhood experiences and specific parenting patterns that prevent a child from developing emotional regulation. Kenny Weiss explains exactly what creates narcissism and why not every child who experiences these conditions becomes a narcissist.
Narcissism is not a genetic destiny. Out of the entire human genome, only three genes are truly deterministic — Huntington's disease, beta thalassemia, and muscular dystrophy. Every other gene, including any genetic predisposition toward narcissistic traits, requires an environmental trigger to activate. That trigger is childhood. Helicopter parenting, overprotective parenting, entitled parenting, conditional love, and spoiling all deprive a child of the ability to learn emotional regulation through natural disappointment and struggle. The child never learns to tolerate discomfort, and that inability becomes the foundation of narcissistic behavior in adulthood.
Adverse childhood experiences are present in the background of every narcissist. These include neglect, physical or emotional abuse, abandonment, chaotic attachment, and insecure bonding with caregivers. Spoiling a child is itself a form of deprivation — when parents remove all struggle, the child never develops the internal skills to regulate emotions or tolerate disappointment. This is why narcissism is rising: the previous generation's cold, domineering parenting style was replaced by over-attached helicoptering, which creates a different but equally damaging wound. The child who was never allowed to scrape their knees at age four cannot handle emotional disappointment at age twenty-four.
Kenny Weiss identifies two levels of narcissism: the underempowered narcissist, who is treatable, and the overempowered narcissist — the covert, overt, and malignant types most people recognize — who is almost impossible to treat. Each child responds to adverse childhood experiences individually. Siblings raised in the same household develop different survival responses. One may become a narcissist, another may become the person who is attracted to narcissists. The individual variation does not change the fact that these parenting patterns are always present in what creates narcissism. Society's denial that every childhood contains some degree of trauma is the single biggest barrier to addressing narcissism at its root.
